Toshiba Unveils First-Ever Laptop with 21:9 Screen [HANDS ON]
There’s something unusual about Toshiba‘s Satellite U845W laptop. Have a look at the pic — can you guess what it is? That’s right, the new Toshiba has a screen with an “ultra-wide” aspect ratio of 21:9, perfect for watching many blockbuster movies.
The U845W is an Ultrabook, meaning it’s an ultra-thin design that packs Intel Core processors, in this case the third-generation chips (a.k.a. Ivy Bridge). You can configure it with either 256GB solid-state drive or a 500GB hard disk that’s paired with a 32GB SSD for the rapid booting and wake-up that’s a hallmark of the Ultrabook label…
Shell Still Can’t Figure Out How To Use Anti-Theft Stickers On Gas Pumps
- http://consumerist.com
It’s a really great idea to try to prevent people from skimming credit cards at ATMs and gas pumps with anti-theft stickers – but the first important step? You gotta put the sticker in the right spot. Shell failed at this back in October, and it appears it’s still totally clueless when it comes to sticker placement.
Consumerist reader Charles sent in this pic using our mobile Tipster app, writing, “My local Shell doesn’t really get the point of this sticker.”
In order for those handy stickers to work, the sticker must be placed on the spot where someone would try to break into the machine to install a skimmer…

Plastic Hanger Shrink Ray Costs You 4 Cents Per Hanger
- http://consumerist.com
Jeff needed some plastic hangers, and found some at Kmart that cost just a little more than he wanted to pay. But the odd thing was that the signage wasn’t quite right: the price given was for ten hangers, and the packages actually on the shelf contained eight hangers each. Okay, it’s not a big deal. And broken down
Another reason I have to learn to drive the extra 3 miles to Walmart. Is this perhaps a variation of the Grocery Shrink Ray?

According to reports, store employees detained the man around 1 p.m. PT on Friday, believing he had stolen clothing and mouthwash.
“While being detained in the parking lot, the suspect began fighting with the loss prevention personnel,” a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy tells the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. “When the [police] officers arrived, the suspect was being restrained by loss prevention officers…
Disney Networks To Stop Airing Junk Food Ads To Kids
- http://consumerist.com
With growing public and regulatory interest in how not-exactly-healthy foods are advertised and marketed toward children, the Walt Disney Company is announcing today that any foodstuffs advertised during kid-focused TV programming on its many channels will have to meet the company’s nutritional standards.
The new rules, which the company says are merely the adoption of suggested government guidelines from last year, would apply to ads that air on Disney-owned channels during programming aimed at children younger than 12 years old…
It’s Not LivingSocial’s Problem That Gun Range Is All Booked Up
- http://consumerist.com
On group deal site LivingSocial, Bob bought passes for a fun night at a nearby gun range. The problem is that he hasn’t been able to actually use them. Not because he hasn’t had time, but because after two visits to the range, they haven’t been able to let him in because the place is full or booked for leagues. Funny, the deal didn’t say anything about certain days being off limits. He tried to get a refund for these vouchers, but LivingSocial isn’t interested. Guess he’s stuck calling ahead to see if they might deign to let him in…

Reader Devotee would like to purchase a computer from Lenovo. A laptop, specifically, for his son. But Lenovo doesn’t want to sell him a computer. After confirming the purchase and authorizing the purchase with his credit card company twice, the order just got canceled. Did they run out of stock of this particular computer? Was his purchase flagged for fraud? Did he just catch them on a bad day? They won’t say, and he can’t get in touch with anyone who can tell him.

This Is Why You Should Photograph Your Rental Car
- http://consumerist.com
Dan and his wife took a vacation in Hawaii, and rented a car for their use while visiting. Only the car that they rented was in pretty rough shape on the outside. They took it, but carefully documented all of the pre-existing damage. This was handy, since Budget proceeded to try to make Dan and Mrs. Dan accountable for the damage that they had done to the car during their supposed accident. When Dan mentioned having extensive photos and even a video of the car’s condition when he picked it up, Budget coincidentally turned up his original paperwork documenting the damage right away…
