Court Rules That Pay TV’s Nasty Habit Of Bundling Channels Is Legal
- http://consumerist.com
Pay TV companies make bundles by bundling channels together in subscription packages, forcing customers to pay inflated fees for packages that are stuffed with channels they don’t care about. The U.S. Court of Appeals could have done subscribers a solid by forcing cable and satellite companies to change their modus operandi, but it ruled that there’s nothing illegal about the exploitative practice, upholding a judgment in a lower court.
Deadline reports the suit, which went after companies including NBCUniversal, Viacom, Time Warner, Comcast and DirecTV, fell short because the complaint failed to show that pay TV companies violate antitrust laws…
NHTSA Investigates Engine Fire Reports In Pair Of Vehicles
- http://consumerist.com
Having a car that looks hot is one thing, but one that feels hot because its engine is on fire is another. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration is looking into reports that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and 2010 Jeep Wrangler are suffering engine fires. The investigations could possibly lead to recalls, but there’s no action on that front as of yet. Both Chevy and Jeep say there have been no reports of injuries or deaths due to possible defects.
According to the AP, two Cruze owners reported car-totalling fires…
If You’re Having A Baby, Expect Sticker Shock
- http://consumerist.com
Those little bundles of joy parents spawn don’t come cheap. Babies begin shaking you down for money months before they even pop out, and many don’t quit even after they’ve graduated college.
The actual amount your baby will cost you depends on a number of factors, such as your health insurance, which can make the cost of delivery range from nothing to tens of thousands of dollars, and your living arrangements and work hours, which will determine the amount of daycare you need…
Philadelphians With DirecTV Now Have No Way Of Watching Phillies Baseball On TV
- http://consumerist.com
For years, Philadelphia Phillies fans with DirecTV have found themselves unable to watch most of the team’s games because the satellite provider and Comcast refuse to come to a resolution over the channel that carries those contests. Now another annoying slap-fight between DirecTV and a broadcaster has left its Philadelphia-area subscribers completely in the dark for this upcoming baseball season.
Over the weekend, DirecTV and the Tribune Company could not come to terms over their contract before it expired on April 1…

NYC Launches a Better Map App for Tourists
- http://feeds.mashable.com/mashable
New York City is launching a better map for its 50 million annual tourists — or at least one that makes it easier to patronize city businesses.
A new iPhone map app from the city’s official tourism center portrays businesses not as little red pins, but with their logos. It incorporates social media updates, OpenTable booking capabilities and daily deals directly into the map.
The app is a co-branded version of a map app called CityMaps that launched earlier this month. By hooking into a bundle of APIs, it’s able to expand beyond capabilities of a typical online map…

Nokia Takes on Apple in ‘Hidden Camera’ Ad Campaign [VIDEOS]
Nokia is coming out swinging in an attempted comeback into the U.S. market.
The mobile device manufacturer, which is introducing its Windows Phone-fueled Lumia 900 later this week, has launched a putative “hidden camera” campaign featuring what purports to be behind-the-scenes conversations at Apple and Google.
In the video above, “Fragile,” an exec at an unnamed company points out that the phone in question is fragile. Though the phone is unrecognizable because it’s pixellated, the date, “2007-07-09,” would seem to indicate that it’s Apple’s iPhone, since that was close to that phone’s original launch date…
